LONDON TRIP
Someone once said that Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer. How right he or she was! The UHS London – Edinburgh 2022 Experience allowed our Senior IV & V students to spend two ‘enriching’ weeks engaging with two of the world’s most famous capital cities: London, the epicentre for culture and history, and Edinburgh with its amazing landscapes, medieval castles and cobblestone streets. Not only did both cities offer our students endless opportunities to improve their English language skills while exploring the surroundings, but they also expanded their world views offering chances for personal development as well as a greater sense of independence. Encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones as they met interesting people, soaked up the sounds and sights, tried new things and understood more about the world, this trip helped build interpersonal skills. In addition, travelling enhanced their adaptability and critical thinking skills, taught them to better manage time (Well, in most cases anyway…), and sharpened their organizing skills.
Embarking on a journey with friends or acquaintances is always an unpredictable, challenging voyage but we were ready to rise to the occasion! United Kingdom was, for most, a whirlwind of emotions, lots of fun and new adventures. For many, also the experience of a lifetime, a real eye-opener. The trip inspired our students’ curiosity and, what is more important, stronger relationships among the groups beyond the four walls of the classrooms. They strengthened bonds, forged new friendships and hold priceless memories that they will treasure forever because, unlike material things, these will stay with them no matter where they go.
School is one of the best places to expand our academic knowledge, but there is nothing more enriching than travelling because instead of being told something, we experience it first-hand. Indeed, we slept very little and walked and did so much: London, Cambridge, Stonehenge, Bath, Edinburgh. Not even the heat wave could stop us! Yes, there was total exhaustion, sore and swollen feet, sightseeing blisters, shoe pain but it was all worth it: the feeling of camaraderie, of happiness, the laughter and teasing, and a sense of accomplishment prevailed. The educational and personal gains of the UHS London-Edinburgh Experience were unique and an invaluable life experience.
